With all the excitement of Austin Rivers’ commitment to Duke, there is one thing that is being slightly overlooked: Scholarship situation. I know there is talk about some guys going pro (i.e. Kyrie Irving, Mason Plumlee, and Seth Curry), but what if they decide to stay. It is not a given that Kyrie is going to go pro after one year, he mentioned in the past that if Austin Rivers committed to Duke he would consider staying. Also keep in consideration, the NBA lockout. Lets just take a look at the current scholarship situation:

- Duke will still has 1 Scholarship to use for the Class of 2011. Keep in mind, NCAA allows 13 active scholarships. Here is the breakdown:

2010 Scholarship players
Irving
Thornton
Curry
Dawkins
Hairston
Plumlee
Plumlee
Smith
Singler
Kelly

Walk-on
Zafirovski
Peters

-If no one declares for the NBA Draft early or transfers, Duke will have 1 Scholarship to use for the class of 2012. Duke would loose only Miles Plumlee to graduation. Here is the breakdown:

2011 Scholarship Players (If no one declares early)
Irving
Thornton
Curry
Dawkins
Hairston
Plumlee
Plumlee
Plumlee
Kelly
Rivers
Gbinije
Adams

Taking a look at the roster, this is a great position to be in. Duke currently has the #2 recruiting (according to ESPN) class in 2011 and one scholarship to use, possibly. With Quincy Miller and Quinn Cook attending Countdown to Craziness, Duke may still be looking to make a move. Keep recruiting or STOP!!!!

Here is what I think:

Coach K may try to hold on to that scholarship for the class of 2012. If no one goes pro (which I doubt), Miles will be the only guy to graduate, leaving us with one scholarship for 2012. However, if you can land a player like Q. Miller, I dont think you pass that up. There is the possibility for Duke to loose three players to the draft early, therefore freeing up more scholarships. IMHO I think we stop recruiting unless we can land Q. Miller. Quinn Cook does not bring anything extraordinary to Duke, we are already STACKED at the guard position. Either way, its good to be in the position Duke is in right now. LOVE IT.

Well, Well, Well!!!! It looks as if the 3rd Plumlee has committed to Duke after all the speculation that he was not. Most Duke fans probably knew, in the back of their mind, that he would eventually become a Dukie. How could you turn the opportunity down the possibility to play with your brothers in 2011-2012.

So What does this mean for Duke……..

Added Frontcourt Depth: Along with Tyler Adams, MP3 will add to what should be a talented, versatile frontcourt that will likely include Joshua Hairston, Mason Plumlee and Miles Plumlee. This will also allow Ryan Kelly to slide down into his natural position, Small Forward.

History in the Making: Assuming both of his brothers stay at Duke, — Mason is entering his sophomore year and Miles will be a junior — then it will mark the first time in ACC history that three siblings will be on the same team’s roster.

Possibly a Top 10 Class: The Center rankings are all over the place. According to ESPN he is ranked #34 overall (#4 Center), Scout #5 Center, Rivals #99 overall (#11 Center). Duke needs the final piece of the puzzle to complete a possible back-to-back top 10 recruiting class.

No Quincy Miller: With Tyler Adams and Marshall Plumlee, I highly doubt that Quincy Miller will sign with Duke. Especially, with ONE Scholarship available (we all know who that is reserved for). I am sure that he will be signing with Kentucky, giving them another top 10 commit.

After watching some video of Marshall, I am not that excited about the commitment. Why? To me he has a lot to work on. 1.) He needs to gain weight which will come, he is just a senior in high school, I know. 2.) Develop post play 3.) Get physical in the post. Watch this and you will know why I am not overly exited. Watch how Austin Rivers destroys him.

The problem with Duke’s current Bigs, is that they don’t bang in the post. They are all finesse type post players. I do, however, think that Tyler Adams will change that. I do like Marshall’s attitude and tenacity as you can see in some of his highlight reels. Marshall does have another year in high school to work on himself and I am sure he will. He has HUGE upside, just like Tyler Adams, and Coach K is the best when it comes to getting the best out of his player.

I was doing some browsing last night and I found a very interesting guest blog entry on Fox Sports Community by none other than, Austin Rivers. After reading this I was sort of confused. This blog entry is nothing like his last diary entry at highschoolhoop.com from about a week ago. It brought me and I’m sure it will bring most Duke fans back down to earth and realize that he is NOT a lock to come to Duke, or is he?

On his diary, he seems like he is very excited about Duke and from the impression I get, he is not far from committing. BUT, in the newest turn of events he throws a few “gotcha’s” in there. Here is what I found interesting about this new entry:

1.) CAN WE TAKE THIS ARTICLE SERIOUSLY: When Austin was being introduced, the blog stated that Austin Rivers isn’t the son of Doc Rivers. Hmmmmm, makes me wonder if this is some kind of joke??????

2.) HE DID MENTION DUKE, MORE THAN ONCE: One thing that is consistent is that he shows love for Coach K and Duke. He noted how he had never been recruited before because he committed to Florida very quickly, and he is interested in Duke. He also talked very briefly about his visit to the Banquet.

3.) UNC, KANSAS…….. KENTUCKY, even FLORIDA’S BACK: OK I knew Kentucky was on the list, but maybe a long shot at best. It seems as if Calipari is inching closer and closer to this kid and I don’t like it on bit. Austin states, “I might also look at Kentucky with the success that (John) Calipari has had with his players.” There is no denying that Calipari has major success with producing NBA-ready guards (i.e. Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall). If you look deeper into his words, he says the I MIGHT look at Kentucky. August is coming pretty soon, my friend.

The thing that bothers me is that Kentucky nor Florida were mentioned in the diary entry a week ago. Now all of the sudden, here comes Kentucky and now I’m still interested in Florida, I don’t get it.

4.) DEVELOPMENT: Austin goes on to talk about his summer plans and how he wants to develop his skills and become a great defender. Duke Basketball prides itself on playing tough defense. Is this a clue?

Here is what I’m thinking, I would like some feedback from those that have been following this Austin Rivers recruitment. Is he dragging this thing out for attention? maybe. Does he really want to make the right decision and not rush into committing like he did the first time? maybe. This recruitment is frustrating and the longer it drags out, I think Duke will lose out. If he makes the choice in August or before he starts school, I think he comes to Duke. Thats how a feel about it, what do you think.??

A couple of the ACC/BIG TEN challenge games leaked yesterday. The official release date is on Thursday, but I am going to take the time to preview the games that leaked. Just by looking at the matchups that leaked, it should be a good Challenge this year. Overall, the ACC is 10-1 since the inception of the challenge back in 1999. The only lose came last year, hopefully the ACC can get back on top. Lets take a look at the matchups.

MICHIGAN STATE vs. DUKE – Michigan State will have to come to Durham and face the defending national champs in what’s bound to be the most anticipated game of the season. This matchup will likely feature the nations #1 and #2 team. I’m sure Cameron Indoor will be rocking that night. Let’s not forget that MSU is returning 4 of 5 starters and most likely a Kalin Lucas will be healthy. Duke is also returning 2 of their top 3 scorers last year in Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith. One advantage Duke will have is size, as MSU rarely ever pulls their 7 footer Tom Herzog off the bench. Duke is 10-1 in the challenge, going 3-0 at home. MSU is 5-5 in the challenge, going 1-3 on the road. Since you are forcing me to make a prediction, I am going with Duke at home in a close one.

Challenge Results Last Year: MSU 82 – UNC 89 / DUKE 69 – WIS 73

Prediction: One advantage Duke will have is size, as MSU rarely ever pulls their 7 footer Tom Herzog off the bench. Duke is 10-1 in the challenge, going 3-0 at home. MSU is 5-5 in the challenge, going 1-3 on the road. I don’t MSU will have anyone that can guard Kyle Singler, if he is a the three position. Duke was undefeated at Cameron Indoor last year, I think that success continues, I am going with Duke at home in a close one.

Matchup to Watch: Nolan Smith vs. Kalin Lucas

PURDUE vs VIRGINIA TECH - We all know Purdue is going to be a Top 5 team with starter Robbie Hummel healthy, JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore withdrawing from the NBA Draft. Virginia Tech should appear in the Top 25, returning all 5 starters, including ACC leading scorer Malcolm Delaney, from last year’s 25-9 team. This should be a great measuring stick for Virginia Tech. As we all know, they did not schedule any difficult non-conference games last year, and got snubbed from the tourney. We can already see that their schedule will look different.

Challenge Results Last Year: WAKE 58 – PUR 69 / IOWA 64 – VT 70

Prediction: The numbers don’t look good for Purdue in the Challenge, 3-6 and 0-4 on the road but this year I think they get their first road victory. Although Virginia Tech plays very well at home, I think Purdue is too much to handle. Delaney does not do well against great defenses and Purdue has one. I don’t think Virginia Tech has anyone that can guard JaJuan Johnson or Robbie Hummel in the post. If Purdue can keep Delaney away from the free throw line (where he scores most of his points), I’m going with Purdue.

Matchup to Watch – Malcolm Delaney vs. E’Twaun Moore

NORTH CAROLINA vs ILLINOIS - The battle of two NIT teams from last year and both should be located somewhere in the Top 25 this year. This will be an interesting game, these two matchup very well. Going to Assembly Hall and playing is tough within itself, but Illinois is returning all 5 starters and UNC will be relying heavily on their incoming Freshman class, mainly Harrison Barnes. Demitri McCamey withdrew from the NBA Draft, giving Illinois their leading scorer back (15.1 PPG). UNC will have to identify their go-to guy as they lost their top 2 scorers in Ed Davis and Deon Thompson.

Challenge Results Last Year: MSU 82 – UNC 89 / ILL 76 – CLEM 74

Prediction: Illinois is 4-7, 2-2 at home in the Challenge. UNC is 6-5, 3-2 on the road. As I said this is a pretty even matchup but I am going with chemistry. Illinois has it, returning all five starters. UNC also lacks front court depth, they are going to have a tough time guarding 7’1″, Mike Tisdale. If Henson or Zeller get in foul trouble, Tisdale is going to work. There is too much unknown about UNC at this point, especially if another post player is not signed by the start of the season. Illinois in a close one at Assembly Hall (for now).

Matchup to Watch: Tyler Zeller vs. Mike Tisdale

NC STATE vs WISCONSIN – NC State has a great incoming Freshman class, but also their leading scorer Tracy Smith withdrew his name from the NBA Draft. Wisconsin loses two of their top 3 scorers in Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon. Wisconsin havs addressed their loses in their incoming recruiting class, but I don’t think these guys will be immediate impact guys. One advantage that Wisconsin has and NC State may struggle with is size. Seven Footer, Jon Leuer is Wisconsin leading scorer and I don’t think NC State has anyone to guard him. NC State has the athleticism is beat Wisconsin, but they will have to do it at the Kohl Center, where Duke went down last year.

Challenge Results Last Year: DUKE 69 – WIS 73 / NW 65 – NCST 53

Prediction: NC State is 5-5, 1-4 on the road in the Challenge. Wisconsin is 5-6, 3-1 at home. NC State’s Freshman class, that include CJ Leslie, will have to step up to take this team to the next level. Sydney Lowe, will have a decent bench to go to if necessary. Wisconsin was so tough last year because of their excellent guard play. With that said, I’m going with NC State in an upset at the Kohl Center.

Matchup to Watch: Jon Leuer vs Tracy Smith

OHIO STATE vs FLORIDA STATE – Ohio State lost Evan Turner to the Draft, but get who I think is the best player in the 2010 class, Jared Sullinger. OSU will still find themselves in the top 10 in the nation. Florida State also loses their leading scorer Soloman Alibi but have a decent recruiting class. One thing that FSU usually has an advantage is size against other teams, but not OSU. OSU matches up pretty well against FSU with the exception of the Center position. This should be a very interesting matchup to watch.

Prediction: OSU is 4-5, 1-2 on the road in the Challenge. FSU is 6-4, 4-1 at home. Last year there these two teams faced off with the ACC/BIG TEN Title on the line at OSU, with OSU prevailing. This year, no 25 points coming from Evan Turner and no 21 points from Soloman Alibi. In the end, I think OSU will beat FSU again with a solid contribution from Jon Diebler. I’m not confident about this one but I will go with it for now.

Challenge Results Last Year: FSU 64 – OSU 77

Matchup to Watch: Jared Sullinger vs Chris Singleton

As we all know Austin Rivers updated is diary/blog, reflecting on his visit to Duke and going to the Basketball Banquet. After reading this, I wanted to dig a little deeper into what is important to him and try to see what school he may choose. Lets take a closer look:

1.) First off, he mentions how he wants he AAU coaches to see Duke because all they know is Florida. Here is what he said:

“That was important for me to get Coach T.J. down there to see Duke because, while the decision is mine, he’ll have an influence on my decision.”

Apparently his coaches really like Duke and said this:

“Right after we left there he was in the Duke family! It was funny! He went from being a Gator to a Blue Devil in a matter of hours. He was just really impressed with how they operate and the atmosphere down there.”

2.) He also wants to be at a school where he knows some of the players, here is what he said:

“I definitely keep in touch with recruits from some of the schools I’m looking at. I talk to Myck Kabongo (Texas commit) and Kyrie Irving (Duke signee) all the time. Those two are my boys. I talk to Myck like every other day either on the phone or on text, and Kyrie and I talk a lot too. Those are my closest friends on the circuit for sure. I’m pretty cool with Kendall Marshall (North Carolina signee) too.”

Looks to me like he his very close to Irving and Kabongo and just cool with Marshall.

3.) He wants to be apart of a team that is consistently in the spotlight and always in the top 10. Here is what he said:

“That stuff is important to me. Also, going into a program where you’re going to be right in the spotlight is big for me too. If you go into a program where you know you’re gonna be Top 10, Top 5 or No. 1 like Duke is supposed to be next year, it’s attractive. …”

He said it himself, Duke is going to be #1 next year. If my memory serves me correct, Duke never dropped out of the top 10 last year. Duke is also one of the most televised teams in the nation, is that spotlight bright enough for you Austin??

Here are my thoughts: If you look at what is important to Austin (out of his own mouth), Duke has to be the favorite. UNC is in a rebuilding process, Texas is not a GREAT basketball program, and Kansas is a good fit but he doesn’t know anyone on the team. Duke fits all his criteria and SHOULD be he final destination. Roy Williams is a hell of a recruiter and may have some tricks up his sleeve so we have to keep an eye on him, but in the end he wanted to be recruited by Duke and he got his wish. By the 2011-2012 season, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith will have graduated, leaving the need for a scorer. Austin is a pure scorer, to me he is an athletic Jon Scheyer or JJ Redick. He still has some official visits to use, so he should be visiting Duke again before he makes a decision in August. Here is what he said about a time line on his decision:

“My goal is to have a decision around August. I want to have it done before my high school season for sure, but I’m shooting for August. That looks doable right now.”

Since my last post, many things have happened from transfers to NBA declarations and players returning. Lets take a better look into the future now that the rosters are a little closer to completion.

FLORIDA STATE

Last Year’s Record: 22-10 (10-6)
Key Departure: Solomon Alibi (Declared for Draft)
Key Recruit: Okaro White - Power Forward #10 ESPN
Star Player: Chris Singleton

Florida State, to me is the sleeper of the ACC. They have all the pieces to make an ACC Title run. Solomon Alibi has officially left the building, the Seminoles may struggle and this is why: He was their leading scorer averaging 11.7 PPG, but he was a BIG reason as to why they were one of the toughest defensive teams in the country keeping guys out of the paint and averaging 2.3 BPG. Chris Singleton and Michael Snaer will be back, giving the ‘Noles more experience at the forward and guard positions. Deividas Dulkys and Luke Loucks can drain the three (both shoot 40% from deep), opening up the lane more for Alabi in the paint. With Alibi gone, the size advantage the FSU had over the ACC is still there, but took a big hit. Xavier Gibson will have to do better that his 2 PPG average as he will have to fill some big shoes. I do think they will compete, giving many undersized teams a hard time.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Derwin Kitchen
SG: Michael Snaer
SF: Chris Singleton
PF: Okaro White
C: Xavier Gibson

CLEMSON

Last Year’s Record: 21-11 (9-7)
Key Departure: Trevor Booker (Graduation)
Key Recruit: Cory Stanton Point Guard #79 ESPN
Star Player: Demontez Stitt

With Oliver Purnell leaving for DePaul and new coach Brad Brownell, from Wright State, this has to be a rebuilding year for the Tiger’s. Trevor Booker’s departure will make many automatically dismiss the Tigers, but this team returns some OK talent. DeMontez Stitt (11.4 PPG), Andre Young (9.2 PPG), and Tanner Smith (8.7 PPG) will have to score more to make up for Booker’s absence in the lineup. Young can drain the three and could help Clemson make the jump from relying on Booker for most of its scoring to relying more on its guard play. It also did not help that the guy they brought in to ease the lose of Booker, Marcus Thornton is leaving because of the departure of Coach Purnell. With no true post presence, this team is bound to struggle against bigger teams in the ACC. Good Luck and welcome to the ACC Coach Brownell!!!

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Tanner Smith
SG: Demontez Stitt
SF: Bryan Narcisse
PF: Jerai Grant
C: Devin Booker

VIRGINIA TECH

Last Year’s Record: 21-11 (9-7)
Key Departure: NONE
Key Recruit: Jarrell Eddie Small Forward #24 ESPN
Star Player: Dorenzo Hudson

Malcolm Delaney might finally get the credit he’s due with Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez and Duke’s Jon Scheyer graduating. He recently decided to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft and come back for his senior year. Malcolm Delaney, Dorenzo Hudson and Jeff Allen return to make Seth Greenberg’s Hokies one of the better teams, on paper, in the ACC for next season. Seth has all of his main contributors back, so this will be the same team that gave everyone problems last year in the ACC. The out of conference schedule will be better, giving Virginia Tech a better chance of making the NCAA Tournament. The only issue I see with this team, in conference and out, will be size. They lack size and did not address it in their recruiting class. They had a chance last year to do big things and they didn’t. With the same team back for more next year, will things be any different???

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Malcolm Delaney
SG: Dorenzo Hudson
SF: Terrell Bell
PF: Jeff Allen
C: Victor Davila

NORTH CAROLINA

Last Year’s Record: 20-17 (5-11)
Key Departure: Ed Davis (Declared for NBA Draft), Wear Brothers (Transferred)
Key Recruit: Harrison Barnes Small Forward #1 ESPN
Star Player: Harrison Barnes

In recent weeks, the Tar Heels’ Wear Brothers have decided to transfer, delivering a HUGE blow to the Roy and UNC. This leaves only Zeller and Henson to defend the post and no bench post players, not one body. The closest thing to a post player is Will Graves and maybe Harrison Barnes. If Harrison Barnes is as advertised, he will provide instant offense and will be the most versatile player for the Tar Heels next year. Incoming recruit Reggie Bullock should be able to provide shooting prowess from deep, something the Heels missed terribly last year. In order for this team to be successful, they will have to stay healthy and stay out of foul trouble because of their lack of front court depth. Zeller is very injury prone, having not played a complete season in his first two years. With thier two leading scorers in Ed Davis (12.9 ppg) and Deon Thomson (13.7 ppg) headed to the NBA, and the Wear Bros transferring leaving Zeller and Henson, the Heels may struggle, especially on the boards. The lack of front court depth should not be an Achilles “Heel” in ACC play. No one, with the exception of FSU, have a big team. If Roy can land one more recruit to add some front court depth, I do still believe this team will be a top 5 ACC team next year and should make the NCAA Tournament.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Larry Drew II
SG: Will Graves
SF: Harrison Barnes
PF: John Henson
C: Tyler Zeller

NORTH CAROLINA STATE

Last Year’s Record: 20-16 (5-11)
Key Departure: Farnold Degand (Graduation)
Key Recruit: C.J. Leslie Power Forward #5 ESPN
Star Player: C.J. Leslie

Just got word that Tracy Smith has decided to come back for his Senior year. This is GREAT news for the Pack, as they should be a LOCK for top 5 in the ACC. Tracy Smith dropped 16.5 PPG and all Duke fans know what Tracy Smith is about, we witnessed it first hand. Sydney Lowe was hanging by a thread a State and needed Tracy Smith back to make a run for the title. Recruits CJ Leslie and Ryan Harrow, with or without Tracy Smith, were going to be a force for NC State. Add them to DeShawn Painter (who has not reached his potential), Scott Wood (Deadly from Three), and Tracy Smith, this should equal job security for Sydney Lowe. The key lies with Lowe, if you gave this team to some of the better coaches in the NCAA, they would be a lot better. With the roster he has, Lowe should be safe for the next 2-3 years.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Ryan Harrow
SG: Javier Gonzalez
SF: Scott Wood
PF: C.J. Leslie
C: Tracy Smith

WAKE FOREST

Last Year’s Record: 20-11 (9-7)
Key Departure: Al-Farouq Aminu (Declared for NBA Draft)
Key Recruit: J.T. Terrell Shooting Guard #14 ESPN
Star Player: C.J. Harris

With Dino Gaudio fired and replaced by Jeff Bzdelik from Colorado and on top of that loosing a HUGE chunk of their team (Al-Farouq Aminu, Ishmael Smith, L.D. Williams, Chas McFarland) this will DEFINITELY be a rebuilding year for the Deacons. One good thing is that Jeff Bzdelik keeps Dino Gaudio’s top 10 recruiting class in tact. Loosing 3 of your top 4 scorers is a tough pill to swallow, and puts a lot on the shoulders of CJ Harris, Ari Stewart, and Tony Woods. They will have a lot of responsibility and will have to lead this young team. I haven’t heard or seen much from the incoming recruiting class but according to all of the recruiting sites they are pretty good. I think it is a great way to start for Wake to begin the rebuilding process.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: C.J. Harris
SG: J.T. Terrell
SF: Ari Stewart
PF: David Weaver
C: Tony Woods

MARYLAND

Last Year’s Record: 24-9 (13-3)
Key Departure: Grevis Vasquez (Graduation)
Key Recruit: Mychal Parker Shooting Guard #12 ESPN
Star Player: Jordan Williams

The General, along with the other 2 leading scorers for the Terps have all graduated. So what are the Terps to do now, well Jordan Williams would be a good place to start. Although, he did not get off to a good start last year, he finished the season strong averaging 9.6 PPG and 8.6 RPG. He is a beast in the post and should do some damage next year. Adrian Bowie and Cliff Tucker showed flashes of talent coming off the bench last year, and should get starts. Sean Mosley is a great defensive player but he will have to step it up on the offensive side. I’m not to sure how to read this team, I don’t think they are a top 5 team next year but they do have talent.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Adrian Bowie
SG: Sean Mosley
SF: Cliff Tucker
PF: Dino Gregory
C: Jordan Williams

DUKE

Last Year’s Record: 35-5 (13-3)
Key Departure: Jon Sheyer (Graduation)
Key Recruit: Kyrie Irving Point Guard #1 ESPN
Star Player: Kyle Singler

Duke returns Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler, and Andre Dawkins next season, leaving them with the ACC’s best backcourt. Stephen Curry’s younger brother, Seth Curry, will also be available next season after transferring from Liberty and sitting out a year. Add in super freshman Kyrie Irving and Duke’s backcourt looks better than it did with Jon Scheyer. Losing Scheyer will be a big blow in the leadership department, but it’s tough to find many teams with more coming back that Duke. The key to Duke’s success will lie in the hands of the Plumlees and the front court, they have a lot to work in the off-season to fill the shoes of Zoubs and Thomas. Loosing Zoubek and Lance is going to hurt and hurt bad if the Plumlees don’t step it up. Duke no longer has the luxury of a “strong” 4-man rotation in the front-court, and now have to rely on the Plumlees, incoming Freshman Joshua Hairston and Ryan Kelly. With that being said, the amazing backcourt should keep Duke in the NCAA top 10 and on top of the ACC.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Kyrie Irving
SG: Nolan Smith
SF: Kyle Singler
PF: Miles Plumlee
C: Mason Plumlee

GEORGIA TECH

Last Year’s Record: 23-13 (7-9)
Key Departure: Derrick Favors (Declared for NBA Draft)
Key Recruit: Jason Morris Small Forward #15 ESPN
Star Player: Iman Shumpert

With 3 of 4 leading scorers either graduating or leaving for the draft, Paul Hewitt may have second thoughts about turning down the St. John’s job. All hope is not lost for GT, but they are going to have to heavily rely upon their guard play. Iman Shumpert, Glen Rice Jr., Mfon Udofia, and Brian Oliver are all going to have to step up and let’s be honest, their guard play was their downfall last year. Without Derrick Favors, Gani Lawal, and Zachary Peacock dominating the post and not bringing someone in to replace them, Georgia Tech will find themselves in the bottom half of the ACC and Paul Hewitt may find himself without a job at the end of the season.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Iman Shumpert
SG: Glen Rice Jr.
SF: Brian Oliver
PF: Daniel Miller
C: Brad Sheehan

Miami

Last Year’s Record: 20-13 (4-12)
Key Departure: Dwayne Collins (Graduation)
Key Recruit: Rion Brown Shooting Guard #46 ESPN
Star Player: Durand Scott

Miami needs to scheduler tougher non-conference games to get themselves prepared for the conference. Miami started the season 16-1 and their only lose came to Boston College. Scheduling teams from the MEAC and CIAA are not going to help you out. We did see some bright spots come from Durand Scott, who is a scoring machine when he decides to take over a game. We also saw what Miami may look like next year playing pretty well without Dwayne Collins in the ACC tournament. They have a star in Durant Scott and should be able to build their team around him. Miami, depending how they schedule non-conference games, may be a sleeper in the ACC.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Durand Scott
SG: Malcolm Grant
SF: DeQuan Jones
PF: Julian Gamble
C: Reggie Johnson

Virginia

Last Year’s Record: 15-16 (5-11)
Key Departure: Sylven Landesburg (Declared for NBA Draft)
Key Recruit: K.T. Harrell Shooting Guard #26 ESPN
Star Player: Mike Scott

Mike Scott is going to have to be consistent next year, without a doubt. Without Sylven Landesburg last year, Virginia struggled the first few games, but learn how to play without their leading scorer and finished up giving teams like Maryland and Duke all they could handle. With a solid recruiting class that addressed all positions on the court UVA can begin moving on without Landesburg. Mike Scott, Sammy Zeglinski, and Mustapha Farrakhan will all have to be leaders next year. I havent heard much about their recruiting class but I’m sure they will have to contribute early because there is no go-to guy for this team.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Sammy Zeglinski
SG: Jeff Jones
SF: Mustapha Farrakhan
PF: Mike Scott
C: Assane Sene

Boston College

Last Year’s Record: 15-16 (6-10)
Key Departure: Al Skinner (Depaul)
Key Recruit: NONE
Star Player: Joe Trapani

Returning 11 players next year this team should do well. With most of their key contributors back to serve their new coach Steve Donahue from Cornell, I expect BC to be a decent team next year. However, they will lose Rakim Sanders, deciding not to play for Donahue and transfer. It should be interesting how this team responds to their new coach. If they respond well, this team has the tools to do well in the ACC. I’m not going to predict that BC will compete for the ACC Crown, but I would not be shocked to see them back in the NCAA Tournament. They should continue to look to Joe Trapani and Reggie Jackson for the bulk of their scoring.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Reggie Jackson
SG: Biko Paris
SF: Corey Raji
PF: Joe Trapani
C: Josh Southern

Prediction 4/30/2010 Prediction 5/10/2010

1.) Duke 1.) Duke

2.) North Carolina 2.) Virginia Tech

3.) Florida State 3.) NC State

4.) NC State 4.) Florida State

5.) Virginia Tech 5.) North Carolina

6.) Maryland 6.) Maryland

7.) Boston College 7.) Miami

8.) Miami 8.) Boston College

9.) Virginia 9.) Virginia

10.) Wake Forest 10.) Wake Forest

11.) Georgia Tech 11.) Georgia Tech

12.) Clemson 12.) Clemson

As you can see, the only major changes from my last prediction were in the top 5:

Virginia Tech from #5 to #2, mainly because of Malcolm Delaney. They finished #3 last year behind Maryland and Duke, there isn’t any reason why they can’t be #2 or #1 for that matter.

NC State moved from #4 to #3 because of Tracy Smith deciding to come back. With CJ Leslie and Ryan Harrow, this team is set to succeed.

FSU dropped from #3 to #4, Soloman Alibi is a big loss, but Chris Singleton is a leader and should have FSU ready to compete.

North Carolina dropped from #2 to #5 because of the Wear Bros. transferring. This is a big blow to the front court depth. Keep an eye on them, they may move back up with the addition of a solid recruit.

Well we knew someone was going to transfer, I did not expect the two Wear Brothers to be the ones. According to Long Beach Press-Telegram, due to undisclosed reasons, the BOTH David and Travis Wear have decided to transfer after one year at UNC. Here is what their father said:

“Dave Wear said he discussed the decision with Tar Heels’ coach Roy Williams earlier in the evening by telephone and that he hoped that his sons would be released from their scholarship agreements with the school “as early as Thursday.”

This has to be heart breaking for Tar Heel fans, as the Wear Bro’s were the only source of frontcourt depth, leaving all the duties up to Henson and Zeller. The next closest thing they have to a post player is Will Graves and MAYBE Harrison Barnes. Although they were not stars, they were solid role players and would have had a major role on this years team. Not sure where Roy Williams goes from here because the signing deadline is May 19. All of the Top players have committed and Roy may have to rely on a Walk-On or sign a “body”. That also shifts the focus 2010-2011 recruiting class. Yes, they have James McAdoo coming, but they will have step up the recruiting for additional depth. Should be interesting

The brothers each averaged 10 or more minutes per game as freshmen at Chapel Hill. Travis, who is 6-foot-10 and 235 pounds, averaged 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. David, who is 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, contributed 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds a game. Before choosing North Carolina, the Wears had considered UCLA and Arizona.

At this point Duke should be the favorite to repeat as champions, and basically a lock for preseason No. 1 overall. On paper, they look to be even better than the team that cut down the nets in 2010? (Depending on the Plumlees development). Duke looses Thomas, Zoubek, and Scheyer, but replace the “role players” with electric perimeter players Kyrie Irving and Seth Curry. Add these two to Andre Dawkins, who should improve immensely with a second year in the program, along with super lead guard Nolan Smith, and the Blue Devils may have the deepest, most talented backcourt in all of college basketball.

With the experience already on campus and lots of incoming talent, Duke is a solid bet to grab an all important No. 1 seed going into the tournament next season. They should have just enough firepower to edge out the Tar Heels for conference supremacy, once again. Here is a preview of what we can expect next year.

Lets meet the new faces that are suiting up next year.

Kyrie Irving – 6’1″ 172 lbs FR. PG – We sure can wait for him to put on the #1 jersey for Duke. Irving clearly shines is as a scorer, displaying impressive instincts and a very complete game for a player so young. He’s extremely aggressive in transition, making quick, strong moves to the basket any time he sees even a hint of daylight and doing a good job finishing at the rim. He can also create in the half-court, looking like a dangerous threat on the pick and roll with his ability to slash to the basket or pull-up off the dribble. Irving has a terrific shooting stroke both in catch and shoot situations or elevating off the bounce, showing a real knack for throwing the ball in the basket in some very tough situations. He also appears to have very nice court vision, threading the needle with some very difficult passes at times. I only expect to see him in the uniform for 2 years max. I hope he lives up to the hype.

Seth Curry – 6’2″ 170 lbs SO. PG/SG – He is a team player and a very competitive guy, really putting good effort in on the defensive side of the ball, and also showing nice passing skills. He’s not overwhelmingly athletic but has a certain smoothness to his game, doing a good job at using shot-fakes and looking very crafty in transition. He needs to develop more of a dribble-drive game, always preferring to pull up off the dribble for a pretty mid-range jumper. His ability to move off the ball and get open is great. He put up great numbers at Liberty, averaging 20.2ppg in 35mpg and shooting 34% from deep. Lets see if that type of success will translate to the ACC.

Josh Hairston – 6’8″ 210 lbs FR. PF – He is a bit undersized for a power forward at 6-8, who does not possess great athleticism, but is smart, fundamental and versatile enough to emerge as an excellent college player at Duke. When given the opportunity, he will not shy away from taking his man down to the paint and showing somewhat of a post game, although he doesn’t possess great strength or many advanced moves down there. He’s also a solid passer (especially on the outlet after a defensive rebound) thanks to his nice feel for the game, he seems to have a good demeanor on the court and is clearly a good teammate. This same feeling is also transmitted to the defensive end, where Hairston shows good activity level, and is not afraid to stick his nose in and take a charge. He plays hard and puts a very good effort in on the glass, getting his hands on all kinds of loose balls, and even coming up with the occasional block or steal. As it currently stands, he may need to bulk up somewhat to avoid being posted up by the stronger power forwards he’ll inevitably run into in the ACC, as he clearly doesn’t have the lateral quickness to be effective enough defending small forwards. Some comparisons have been drawn to Carlos Boozer, we shall see because he should get plenty of minutes coming off the bench, giving the Plumlees a break.

Carrick Felix – 6’6″ 190lbs SO. SF – There is still some mystery around this guy. Felix was considered a major sleeper out west while attending Millenium high school in Goodyear, Arizona during the 2007-2008 season. Since then he has added some much-needed muscle and fits into the mold of former Duke standouts Dahntay Jones and Gerald Henderson. Felix is described as an extremely athletic player (a scouting report from Rivals.com described him as possessing “NBA Athleticism”) who is a tough-nosed defender on the perimeter and a hard, dedicated worker with upside on the offensive end as well. Felix averaged 14.8 points and 4.7 rebounds this season for the Golden Eagles while leading his team in blocks with 37. Athleticism is something Duke has been lacking for a while now, hopefully he can deliver. I don’t see him touching the court much, especially during conference play. Depending on his play against weaker non-conference games should determine how much we see Mr. Felix.

Tyler Thornton – 6’2″ 180lbs FR. PG – I did over look Ty, forgot all about him because of Irving, Dawkins, Curry and Smith. Thornton is a strong floor leader who’s known for playing stifling defense on the point. But Thornton’s skills on offense appear limited, and he’s clearly the second-best player in Duke’s class at his position behind Kyrie Irving. Duke has a lot of talent in the backcourt with Smith, Irving, Andre Dawkins and Seth Curry all likely to be ahead of Thornton in the rotation when he is a freshman. But Coach K admires players who are fierce defenders and that’s what Thornton does. I dont think he will see the court much next year besides mop up duty.

Now lets take a look at a group that needs to step up into a more important role. On the Championship team they may have been merely role players, next season they will be one year older and hopefully better. I don’t think these guys have met their full potential:

Ryan Kelly - 6’9″ 200lbs SO. SF/PF – He’s still the same highly skilled, yet physically underdeveloped big man who looks to be at his best when facing the basket. Kelly can shoot the ball spotting up or off the dribble, and clearly has range out to the college 3-point line, which is quite an asset at his position. He’s a decent athlete as well, but lacks the strength to be much of a presence with his back to the basket, and struggles at times getting pushed around in the paint defensively and on the glass. He is a very smart, unselfish and highly competitive player, though, which leaves plenty of room for optimism regarding his ability to develop into a terrific college player as his body continues to fill out. He also lacks confidence, I think he will be better playing the SF position where he can step out and shoot the ball.

Mason Plumlee - 6’10″ 210lbs SO. PF/C – Boy does he have large shoes to fill with Zoubs and Lance gone. Offensively, he would rather face the basket and take his man off the dribble than play in the post, but he can also drive to the basket with either hand. To take his game to the next level, Plumlee could work on scoring from the low-post by further developing his footwork. He needs to take advantage of the fact that he is quicker than most at his position. I do think he can be GREAT at Duke and maybe it was the wrist injury that set him back. Lets hope so, we can only go as far as our big men take us. With a dribble-drive guard Kyrie Irving, Mason should be dominate near the basket and have a great Sophomore season.

Miles Plumlee – 6’10″ 225lbs JR. PF/C – As a Junior, Miles is really going to have to step it up BIG TIME. He is similar to his brother in that he would rather face the basket, than play in the post. He did show signs of a sweet 15-18 jump shot in the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. If he can knock that down consistently, it will cause problems trying to defend him. Also, like his brother, to take his game to the next level, Miles could work on scoring from the low-post by further developing his footwork. He also needs to stop getting called for “Tik-Tak” fouls. This year we could afford to get those calls because of the 4-man rotation, next year I don’t think that can happen. With added strength and confidence he could be poised for a breakout junior season.

Andre Dawkins – 6’5″ 196 SO. SG – Dawkins has solid athleticism, an excellent frame and a long wingspan. His basketball IQ is immediately evident when comparing him with his peers, as he seems to have excellent fundamentals and really looks serious about the game, which is a very nice sign. He’s a confident kid who showed no shame in attacking the defense in transition or taking shots from the perimeter, showing a really nice stroke from the perimeter, solid ball-handling skills and the ability to find the open man. His mid-range game seems to need some work, as he’s not nearly as effective pulling up off the dribble as he is with his feet set. He has shown flashes of greatness during this season, knocking down some clutch shots and we all remember the Dunk he had in the ACC Championship game against GT. I am really excited for him next year, he should get solid minutes and with the depth at guard, it can only make him better.

Now lets move to the leaders of this 2010-2011 team, I’m going to call them the Terrific Two or the Dynamic Duo (I know I need to work on the name). As Dickie V calls them Super and Sensational Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith.

Nolan Smith - 6’2″ 185 SR. PG/SG – This guy STILL is flying under the radar in my opinion. Solidly built at 6-3, with a great frame and good, but not amazing athleticism, Smith fills the bill for the most part as far as physical attributes are concerned. He spent minutes at both guard spots for Duke this past season, but his NBA future clearly appears to be at the point, which will give him a definite size advantage against most of his match ups.

His statistic from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010 are like night and day, DOUBLED. I am very pleased with his development and so should the fans. He worked hard in the off-season to improve his mid-range game and outside shooting touch. He is dangerous with the floaters. He Possesses a solid handle, a quick first step and the strength to finish at the rim. He is also an explosive athlete with the ability to average double-figures in scoring as well as be one of the top perimeter defenders in the league.

He should have to play 40 minutes per game this coming up season, with S.Curry, Irving, and Dawkins. His draft stock was relatively high coming out of this season but shut rumors down during the ACC tournament that he was going to declare. I have heard that Seth Curry was the one pushing him in practice, it should be interesting to see how they play together. If he progresses like he did from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010, Duke fans should be really pleased by the end of the season.

Kyle Singler – 6’9″ 210lbs SR. SF/PF – Heeeee’s Back!!! What hasn’t this guy accomplished at Duke. Singler was the 2010 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and led Duke to its fourth all-time national championship. During Singler’s three years at Duke, he averaged 15.9 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. With a second year playing SF, he should settle in and be better. With Kyrie at the point, Duke will play a faster pace game and Singler will get to increase his stock by playing in an NBA style game.

Singler’s return not only provides Duke the experienced star power to go along with youngsters like Dawkins, Curry, Irving, and the Plumlees, but Kyle gives the Devils the rare commodity that is the hybrid 4-man which is rare in the college game today. Elite hybrid fours play in the Association.

According to Rivals.com, Austin Rivers has publicly stated that Duke is his new leader and barely mentioning Florida. Here is the quote:

“I want to go to a school where I can fit in and play well,” Rivers told Rivals’ Jerry Meyer. “Duke and North Carolina run a similar offense and like to get up and down the court. Florida runs some too, but their offense is different. They like to slow it down and make more passes. That’s fine, but that’s really not me.”

“I also want to work on my defense and become a better all-around player. I like how Duke picks up their man full court, and Duke does a great job developing their players. Duke is the lead school for me right now.”

This is wonderful news but given the way his “soap opera” recruitment has gone, I wont be happy until he SIGNS. Not even a verbal commitment from him will get me out of my seat and dancing, OK maybe it will.

This 2011 class is already good, but not great. With the potential addition of Austin Rivers, this class will be GREAT. Remember Duke fans, let’s be patient; he still needs to come for his official visit and plans to announce his commitment before the summer is over. Things are looking good but let’s not get overconfident.

Lets quickly look at how teams are shaping up in the ACC. A lot has been going on, from the coaching carousel, NBA Declarations, and the landing of some big recruits. I will have to adjust my analysis of some of these teams depending on whether or not players stay or go. I love Duke but there are a few teams that could give Duke some problems in the ACC so lets take a quick look in no particular order:

FLORIDA STATE

Last Year’s Record: 22-10 (10-6)
Key Departure: Solomon Alibi (Declared for Draft w/o Agent)
Key Recruit: Okaro White - Power Forward #10 ESPN
Star Player: Chris Singleton

Florida State, to me is the sleeper of the ACC. They have all the pieces to make an ACC Title run. If Solomon Alibi leaves, the Seminoles may struggle and this is why. He was their leading scorer averaging 11.7 points per game and a BIG reason as to why they were one of the toughest defensive teams in the country. Chris Singleton and Michael Snaer will be back, giving the ‘Noles more experience at the forward and guard positions. Deividas Dulkys and Luke Loucks can drain the three (both shoot 40% from deep), opening up the lane more for Alabi in the paint. IF Alibi stays, I can assure you this team will be top 5 in the ACC, bottom line.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Derwin Kitchen
SG: Michael Snaer
SF: Chris Singleton
PF: Ryan Reid

With no true post presence, this team is bound to struggle against bigger teams in the ACC. Good Luck and welcome to the ACC Coach Brownell!!!

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Tanner Smith
SG: Demontez Stitt
SF: Bryan Narcisse
PF: Jerai Grant
C: Devin Booker

VIRGINIA TECH

Last Year’s Record: 21-11 (9-7)
Key Departure: Malcolm Delaney (Declared for Draft w/o Agent)
Key Recruit: Jarrell Eddie Small Forward #24 ESPN
Star Player: Dorenzo Hudson

Malcom Delaney might finally get the credit he’s due with Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez and Duke’s Jon Scheyer graduating, if he stays. Dorenzo Hudson and Jeff Allen return to make Seth Greenberg’s Hokies one of the better teams, on paper, in the ACC for next season. In order for this team to succeed, Delaney HAS to come back, it is very hard to replace 20.2 ppg. The out of conference schedule will be better, giving Virginia Tech a better chance of making the NCAA Tournament. If every single player that contributed this season returns, VT will be a top 5 ACC team. The only issue I see with this team, in conference and out, will be size. They lack size and did not address it in their recruiting class.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Erick Green
SG: Dorenzo Hudson
SF: Terrell Bell
PF: Jeff Allen
C: Victor Davila

NORTH CAROLINA

Last Year’s Record: 20-17 (5-11)
Key Departure: Ed Dave (Declared for NBA Draft)
Key Recruit: Harrison Barnes Small Forward #1 ESPN
Star Player: Harrison Barnes

As much as I hate to say it, the Heels will be back next year. If Harrison Barnes is as advertised, he will provide instant offense and will be the most versatile player for the Tar Heels next year. Incoming recruit Reggie Bullock should be able to provide shooting prowess from deep, something the Heels missed terribly last year. In order for this team to be successful, either Roy Williams is going to have to change his coaching style to fit his players or his players are just going to have to step up. In the NIT (I know, NIT) Drew and Henson showed that they have the skill. One weakness that the Heels do have is post play. Their two leading scorers in Ed Davis (12.9 ppg) and Deon Thomson (13.7 ppg) are headed to the NBA, leaving Zeller, Henson, and the Wear bros. If Zeller can stay healthy, they should be ok. If not, it will be another long season for the Heels. I do still believe this team will be a top 5 ACC team next year and should make the NCAA Tournament.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Larry Drew II
SG: Will Graves
SF: Harrison Barnes
PF: John Henson
C: Tyler Zeller

NORTH CAROLINA STATE

Last Year’s Record: 20-16 (5-11)
Key Departure: Tracy Smith (Declared for Draft w/o Agent)
Key Recruit: C.J. Leslie Power Forward #5 ESPN
Star Player: C.J. Leslie

Just got word that Tracy Smith declared for the draft without an Agent. This is BAD news for the Pack, as they were going to be a lock for my top 5. Now, I have to re-think it. All Duke fans know what Tracy Smith can do averaging 16 ppg and 7 rpg, we witnessed it first hand. Sydney Lowe is hanging on by a thread at State and needs Tracy Smith back to make a run for the title. Recruits CJ Leslie and Ryan Harrow, with or without Tracy Smith, should be a force for NC State. Add them to DeShawn Painter (who has not reached his potential), Scott Wood (Deadly from Three), and possibly Tracy Smith, this should equal job security for Sydney Lowe.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: Ryan Harrow
SG: Javier Gonzalez
SF: Scott Wood
PF: C.J. Leslie
C: DeShawn Painter

Loosing 3 of your top 4 scorers is a tough pill to swallow, and puts a lot on the shoulders of CJ Harris and Ari Stewart. These guys, only rising Sophomore’s, will have a lot of responsibility and will have to lead this young team. I haven’t heard or seen much from the incoming recruiting class but according to all of the recruiting sites they are pretty good.

Prospective Starting Line-Up:

PG: C.J. Harris
SG: J.T. Terrell
SF: Ari Stewart
PF: David Weaver
C: Tony Woods

MARYLAND

Last Year’s Record: 24-9 (13-3)
Key Departure: Grevis Vasquez (Graduation)
Key Recruit: Mychal Parker Shooting Guard #12 ESPN
Star Player: Jordan Williams

The General, along with the other 2 leading scorers for the Terps have all graduated. So what are the Terps to do now, well Jordan Williams would be a good place to start. Although, he did not get off to a good start, he finished the season strong averaging 9.6ppg and 8.6rpg.

The key to Duke’s success will lie in the hands of the Plumlees and they have a lot to work in the off-season.

Key Departure: Sylven Landesburg
Key Recruit: K.T. Harrell Shooting Guard #26 ESPN
Star Player: Mike Scott

Mike Scott is going to have to be consistent next year.

Here is my prediction on the final standings for the ACC (for now):

1.) Duke

2.) North Carolina

3.) Florida State

4.) NC State

5.) Virginia Tech

6.) Maryland

7.) Boston College

8.) Miami

9.) Virginia

10.) Wake Forest

11.) Georgia Tech

12.) Clemson
